Until we meet again…

Eugology for my cousin Marta de Aragón Ceberio, at the Mass to celebrate her life at St. Thomas de Apostle Cathilic Church, Monday, March 21

GOOD AFTERNOON. I WISH TO THANK MARTA´S FAMILY, FATHER ALEJANDRO AND HER FRIENDS EVA AND DELIA WHO ORGANIZED THIS LOVELY MASS. FOR GIVING ME THE PRIVILEGE OF SAYING A FEW WORDS TODAY. QUIERO COMENZAR POR AGRACECERLE A TODAS LAS PERSONAS Y EN ESPECIAL A OLGA Y MARTICA, EL GRAN AMOR CON QUE CUIDARON A MARTA DURANTE SU LARGA ENFERMEDAD.

DEATH, THE DEEPEST OF ALL MYSTERIES, IS ALSO RICH IN SMALLER MYSTERIES. ONE OF THEM IS THAT EVENTHOUGH IT IS PART OF LIFE, EVEN THOUGH WE MIGHT BE EXPECTING IT, IT ALWAYS SURPRISESES US. ANOTHER MYSTERY IS THAT IT BFINGS TO OUR MIND MANY MEMORIES WE DID NOT EVEN KNOW WE HAD. AS IN A DREAM OR A MOVIE, WE GET FLASHES OF MARTA´S LIFE. AND THIS BEAUTIFUL AND MERCIFUL MYSTERY BRINGS US BACK THE PERSON WE LOVED, NOT ILL AND IN PAIN AS IN HER FINAL MONTHS, BUT ALIVE, YOUNG, HAPPY.

NOW THOSE WHO LOVED HER WILL NO LONGER SEE MARTICA, AS WE CALLED HER IN THE FAMILY, IN PAIN IN A HOSPITAL BED. SHE IS RETURNED TO US AS A MISCHIVIOUS LITTLE GIRL — ¡ Y MARTICA ERA TREMENDA DE NIÑA! — PLAYING CATCH AT OUR GRANDMOTHER´S HOUSE – NUESTRO PRIMO JORGE CARVALLO SE ACORDARÁ DE AQUELLOS DOMINGOS –, AS A TEEANAGER WHO LOVED DANCING AND HAVING FUN, AS A WOMAN IN LOVE WITH THE ONE TRUE LOVE OF HER LIFE, HER HUSBAND “CEBE”; AS A YOUNG MOTHER TENDING TO ANA LOURDES AND ANDRÉS, AS A DEVOUTED DAUGHTER AND NIECE WHO TOOK CARE OF HER AILING MOTHER AND AUNTS ´TILL THEIR LAST BREATHS, AS THE YOUNGEST AND FUNNIEST OF HER SIBLINGS, AS THE ABUELA WHO PROUDLY SHOWED THE PHOTOS OF HER GRANDCHILDREN, AS THE COWORKER ALWAYS READY TO HELP OTHERS, AS THE WOMAN WHO SANG AS AN ANGEL IN MANY RELIGIOUS CEREMONIES AND BROUGHT TEARS TO MANY PARISHIONERS, AND WHO SANG WITH GUSTO OLD CUBAN OR AMERICAN SONGS AT FAMILY REUNIONES , AND GATHERINGS WITH FRIENDS.

ANY AND ALL OF THESE WAYS IN WHICH EACH OF YOU MIGHT HAVE KNOWN MARTA, HAVE ONE COMMON DENOMINATOR: A BIG SMILE, HER SPECIAL SMILE WHICH COULD BRIGHTEN THE DARKEST HOURS. EVEN IN MOMENTS OF LONELINESS AND SADNESS, AND SHE MUST HAVE HAD HER SHARE, SHE RADIATED TRUE JOY.

WHERE DID THIS ENGANGING PERSONALITY, THIS DISTINCT VOICE ALWAYS MIXED WITH LAUGHTER, THE MOVEMENT OF HER BEAUTIFUL HANDS CAME FROM? HAVE NO DOUBTS. FATHER ALEJANDRO HAS ALREADY TOLD US. HER JOY CAME FROM WITHIN, BECAUSE IT WAS ROOTED IN HER FAITH, IN HER DEEP RELIGIUS BELIEF IN A GOOD AND GENEROUS GOD.

MARTA ´S FATHER AND MINE WERE BROTHERS, AND SHE WAS BORN NINE DAYS AFTER I WAS, SO WE SHARED A LOT THROUGOUT THE YEARS. I OFTEN WOULD TEASE HER AND TELL HER SHE HAD TO RESPECT ME BECAUSE I WAS OLDER. IT WAS AN UNNECESARRY ADMONITION, FOR SHE RESPECTED AND LOVED ALL, WITHOUT ASKING FOR ANYTHING IN RETURN.

I HAVE KNOWN FEW PEOLPE IN MY LIFE WITH SUCH A PURE SOUL, WITH SUCH AN HONEST AND STRONG FAITH, SO LACKING IN SELFISHINESS OR VANITY. THAT IS WHY TODAY WE SAY GOODPAY TO THE MOTHER, GRANDMOTHER, SISTER, AUNT, COUSIN, FRIEND, COWORKER, SINGER, PARISHIONER WHO WITHOUT DOUBTS IS ALREADY WITH THE LORD, SPREADING HER JOY AMONG THE ANGELS WHO SORROUND HER, AND LOOKING AFTER ALL OF US WITH HER USUAL GENEROSITY.

I DO NOT WISH YOU A GOOD TRIP, DEAR MARTA, MI PRIMIITA QUERIDA. BECAUSE I KNOW YOU HAVE ARRIVED SAFELY TO PORT. WE WILL ALWAYS HOLD YOU IN OUR HEARTS UNTIL THE DAY WE MEET AGAIN.
